Poonch, May 1:District Poonch is witnessing growing concern over delays in processing applications filed under the Right to Information Act, 2005, with several applicants questioning both the timeliness and quality of responses from certain government departments.
Multiple applicants, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that a considerable number of RTI applications remain pending well beyond the legally mandated timeframe. In some instances, they alleged that the replies received were incomplete or non-substantive, falling short of the expectations set by the transparency law.
While no consolidated official data on the total number of pending applications was immediately available, independent civic observers suggest that delays in information access can erode public trust and weaken institutional accountability. “The spirit of the RTI Act lies in timely and meaningful disclosure,” noted a local transparency advocate.
Officials from concerned departments, when approached for comment, acknowledged that delays may occur due to workload pressures and procedural complexities. They emphasized that efforts are ongoing to process applications in accordance with statutory provisions.
It is important to note that, at present, there has been no formal inquiry or official determination establishing deliberate non-compliance by any specific department.
Observers believe that improved administrative coordination, adherence to statutory timelines, and enhanced awareness could significantly strengthen the implementation of RTI provisions in the district.
