POONCH, JAMMU AND KASHMIR — A complete Poonch shutdown in solidarity with Iran’s leadership is underway in the border district on Tuesday as political, social, and religious leaders protest the confirmed killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli airstrike, an event that has dramatically escalated regional tensions and sparked widespread Iran solidarity protests across the region.
Iranian state media officially confirmed on Sunday that the 86-year-old Supreme Leader was “martyred” in an attack on his office compound in Tehran, allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel. The Iranian government has announced a 40-day nationwide mourning period and a one-week public holiday. State broadcaster Press TV reported that four of Khamenei’s family members, including his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter, were also killed in the strike.
The confirmation has ignited strong emotions in Poonch, where Maulana Farooq Misbahi led a coalition of leaders in calling for Tuesday’s complete shutdown. Addressing a gathering, Maulana Misbahi condemned the attack as an assault on Muslim leadership globally. “This is not just an attack on one leader but on the dignity of millions,” he stated, while urging citizens to maintain peace and restraint during the protest.
The protest call has drawn significant cross-community support, with the presence of diverse influential figures lending the movement unusual weight. Among those seen backing the declaration were Nariender Singh Surjan Singh, Kamaljit Singh, Advocate Abdul Majid Khan, and Maulana Abdul Majid Madani. The multi-faith representation including Sikh and Muslim leaders underscored the broad-based nature of the sentiment and projected a message of interfaith unity in response to the Middle East developments.
Speakers at the gathering condemned the US-Israeli strikes as “aggression against the Islamic world” and called upon international bodies to take notice. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has already vowed “harsh, resolute, and regret-inducing retaliation” against the perpetrators, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
Local intelligence reports indicate that most markets in Poonch remain closed on Tuesday, with several transport unions, traders’ associations, and civil society groups extending support to the strike call.
In response to the situation, the administration has tightened security in sensitive areas and is closely monitoring law and order. Authorities have appealed to citizens to maintain peace and uphold the rule of law during the protest.
The confirmed death of Khamenei who led Iran for 36 years has sent shockwaves through the region. According to reports, a three-member interim leadership council has been formed in accordance with Iran’s constitution to assume the leader’s duties during the transitional period.
As the situation develops both internationally and locally, Poonch’s shutdown represents a significant display of solidarity, testing the balance between raw emotion and the restraint urged by both community leaders and state authorities.
