US President Donald Trump has said he has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, signalling a temporary pause in escalating hostilities between the two sides.

In a statement posted on social media on Tuesday, Mr Trump said he would suspend US military action against Iran for a limited period.

“I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” he wrote, describing the move as a “double-sided ceasefire”.

However, the US president made clear that the pause is conditional. He said the ceasefire would depend on Iran agreeing to the “complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz” a critical global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.

The announcement came just over an hour before a self-imposed deadline of 20:00 Eastern Time (00:00 GMT), after which the US had previously indicated it could escalate military action.

There has been no immediate confirmation from Iranian officials regarding the proposed ceasefire or the conditions outlined by Washington.

The Strait of Hormuz has been a focal point in the recent tensions, with fears that any disruption could have far-reaching consequences for global energy markets and international trade.

Analysts say the proposed ceasefire may offer a brief window for diplomacy, although its success will depend on mutual agreement and rapid de-escalation on the ground.

The situation remains fluid, with international observers closely watching for Iran’s response and any further developments in the coming hours.
