SMVDSB Medical College Cancellation a Severe Blow to Jammu’s Aspirations: Raman Bhalla

Jammu:SMVDSB Medical College Cancellation has emerged as a serious setback for Jammu’s healthcare, education and employment prospects, senior Congress leader and former minister Raman Bhalla said while intensifying his public outreach programme in the R.S. Pura–Jammu South Assembly constituency.

Raman Bhalla, who is also the Working President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), interacted with residents through door-to-door visits, public meetings and informal gatherings to understand the grievances and challenges faced by people across the constituency. He said the widening gap between governance and ground realities has pushed common citizens into distress and uncertainty.Bhalla said there is a growing disconnect between governance and ground realities. This gap has pushed large sections of society into distress and disillusionment.

Strongly criticising the SMVDSB Medical College Cancellation, Bhalla termed the decision unjustified and discriminatory, stating that it has shattered the aspirations of thousands of students seeking quality medical education in the Jammu region. He said the move has not only weakened the healthcare infrastructure but has also deprived the region of employment opportunities for doctors, paramedical staff and allied professionals.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of farmers, Bhalla said that recent torrential rains, flash floods and prolonged waterlogging have caused massive losses across agricultural belts. Crops worth crores of rupees have been destroyed, livestock lost and irrigation systems damaged, yet affected farmers continue to await compensation and rehabilitation.

Highlighting the growing unemployment crisis, Bhalla said recruitment in government departments has virtually come to a halt due to the unresolved reservation policy. Thousands of educated youth remain frustrated and directionless, while daily wagers and casual labourers continue to work for decades without job security, social protection or dignity. He demanded their immediate regularisation.

Bhalla also raised the long-pending issues of displaced persons from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, border residents, ex-servicemen and migrant families, stating that their continued neglect reflects a lack of political will. He further criticised the stagnation in industrial growth, failure of promised incentives and the closure of small and medium enterprises, which have worsened unemployment.

Drawing attention to civic problems, Bhalla said Jammu is facing an acute power and drinking water crisis. Frequent power cuts, low voltage and water shortages have become part of daily life, affecting households, farmers, traders and industries. He also pointed to severe staff shortages in hospitals, schools and government offices, crippling service delivery.

Concluding his interactions, Raman Bhalla reiterated that the Congress party will continue to raise issues related to democratic rights, restoration of statehood, protection of land and job rights, transparent governance and social justice. He said the ongoing outreach programme aims to strengthen the people’s voice and restore faith in democratic politics in Jammu and Kashmir. He said the SMVDSB Medical College Cancellation reflects continued neglect of Jammu’s genuine needs and aspirations.
