Poonch weather conditions
Poonch | January 23, 2026
Poonch weather conditions took a severe turn on Friday as continuous rainfall in lower areas and fresh snowfall in higher reaches disrupted normal life across the district.
As a result, road connectivity, education, power supply, and public movement were badly affected.
Moreover, the sudden change in weather led to a sharp fall in temperatures. Consequently, cold wave conditions intensified throughout the Pir Panjal region.
Fresh Snowfall in Higher Reaches of Poonch
Due to an active western disturbance, Poonch weather conditions worsened late Thursday night. Snowfall was reported from high-altitude areas near the Pir Panjal range. In some locations, snow accumulation ranged between five inches and one foot.
Meanwhile, the plains received moderate rainfall. This rainfall, however, brought relief from a prolonged dry spell that had affected the Jammu region for over two months.

Road Connectivity Disrupted Across the District
Traffic authorities suspended movement on the highway.
Because of snow and slush, vehicular movement on several interior roads was partially suspended. The Jammu–Poonch highway, a vital link for the district, remained under constant monitoring by traffic authorities.
Additionally, landslide-prone stretches became risky due to continuous precipitation. Therefore, commuters were advised to avoid unnecessary travel.

The district administration closed schools due to bad weather.
In response to the deteriorating Poonch weather conditions, the district administration ordered the closure of all government and private schools. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure student safety.
Parents welcomed the move. Teachers also supported the decision, citing slippery roads and low visibility.

Health Department and Emergency Services on Alert
Meanwhile, the Health Department placed all medical facilities on high alert. Emergency services were strengthened, and staff availability was ensured across hospitals and primary health centres.
Furthermore, residents, especially the elderly and children, were advised to stay indoors and avoid exposure to extreme cold.
Power and Water Supply Affected
Strong winds disrupted power supply in several areas.
Owing to strong winds and falling trees, several areas reported power outages. However, restoration teams were deployed immediately to repair damaged lines.
In addition, water supply was disrupted in a few rural pockets due to freezing conditions. Officials assured that the situation was under control.
Administration Urges Caution Amid Severe Weather
The district administration appealed to residents to cooperate with authorities. People living in vulnerable and landslide-prone areas were asked to remain alert.
Officials stated that the situation is being reviewed continuously. Further advisories will be issued depending on weather developments.
The district administration closed all government and private schools on Friday. Authorities took the decision to protect students from slippery roads and poor visibility. Meanwhile, traffic police monitored the Jammu Poonch highway and regulated vehicle movement. Power department teams repaired damaged lines and restored electricity in affected areas.
Overall, Poonch weather conditions remain challenging as winter tightens its grip on the district. While the rain has eased dry conditions, snowfall continues to pose risks. Authorities remain on standby to manage any emergencies.
