In a coordinated enforcement drive aimed at curbing the misuse and illegal diversion of prescription medicines, the Poonch district police, in collaboration with the Drug Control Department, carried out inspections of medical establishments across the district on Wednesday.

Officials said a total of 54 medical shops, including chemists, wholesalers and retailers, were inspected during the exercise, which was conducted simultaneously across multiple police station jurisdictions.

According to authorities, the drive focused on ensuring compliance with legal provisions governing the sale and distribution of scheduled drugs. Inspection teams examined sale registers and stock records to verify whether transactions were being properly documented and whether any discrepancies existed in inventory management.

“The objective of the drive is to prevent the misuse of prescription drugs and ensure that all medical outlets adhere strictly to regulatory norms,” an official associated with the operation said.

During the inspections, teams also scrutinised supply chains to identify any signs of diversion or unauthorised sale of controlled substances. Particular attention was paid to bulk or irregular transactions that could indicate potential misuse or illegal distribution.

In addition, compliance with CCTV installation requirements was checked at several establishments as part of efforts to strengthen monitoring and deter unlawful practices. The sale of syringes, especially in bulk quantities, was also reviewed due to its possible links to drug abuse.

Officials said that besides enforcement, the drive also aimed at sensitising shopkeepers about their legal responsibilities and the consequences of non-compliance under existing laws.

No immediate information was available on whether any violations were detected or action initiated against erring non-compliant vendors, officials said, adding that such inspections are likely to continue as part of ongoing efforts to tackle drug abuse in the region.
