The Central Government has blocked the Android application Wingo over allegations of large-scale cyber fraud. Officials said the app was being used to send fraudulent SMS messages from users’ phones without their knowledge.

As a result, innocent users were unknowingly turned into financial “mules”. Their devices were used to support illegal money transfers linked to online scams.

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) received several complaints that triggered immediate action.

Cybercrime officials geo-blocked the app’s command-and-control servers.

Telegram Channels and Videos Removed

Authorities blocked four Telegram channels linked to the app.

In addition, officials removed over 53 promotional videos from YouTube.

False Promises of Easy Income

The app attracted users by offering quick and guaranteed earnings through misleading schemes.

Payments were not routed through verified banking systems. Instead, money was transferred using personal UPI IDs and private wallets, making tracking difficult.

Risky Permissions and Data Privacy Concerns

Investigators found that the app requested access to contacts, gallery, location, and SMS services.

The app blocked many user accounts after they deposited money.

Referral Model Raised Red Flags

Users were encouraged to invite others through referral links. Experts noted that this structure is commonly seen in Ponzi-style schemes.

As complaints increased, the app was removed from the Google Play Store, further raising concerns about its legitimacy.
