Poonch, April 09, 2026Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Thursday organised “Thana Diwas” across all police stations, aiming to strengthen engagement with local communities and address public concerns directly.
According to officials, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote community-oriented policing and improve coordination between law enforcement agencies and residents.
The programme witnessed participation from dozens of residents, including retired government employees, former Sarpanchs, Chowkidars, Lambardars, and other members of civil society.
During the sessions, Station House Officers (SHOs) interacted with attendees and discussed key issues affecting the region, with a particular focus on drug abuse. Officials highlighted the growing concern over narcotics use among youth and outlined measures for prevention and early identification of addiction.
“Community participation is essential in tackling challenges like drug abuse. We urge citizens to share information and work closely with the police,” said Neeraj Sharma, who led the programme at Police Station Mandi.
Participants raised several concerns, including drug availability in certain areas, lack of youth engagement programmes, and delays in addressing minor civic issues.
“Such meetings give us a platform to speak directly with the authorities. However, timely follow-up on grievances remains crucial,” said a local resident and former Sarpanch.
Officials assured that the issues highlighted during the sessions would be addressed on priority and necessary follow-up action would be taken.
Police said that “Thana Diwas” will continue to be organised regularly to enhance transparency, accountability, and public trust.
However, some residents noted that the long-term effectiveness of such initiatives depends on consistent implementation and visible outcomes.
Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate in efforts to curb crime and drug abuse in the district.
