POONCH, April 11: The District Administration in Poonch on Friday launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan’, marking the occasion with an awareness rally and a series of programmes aimed at addressing substance abuse in the district.
The inaugural function was held at the Government Degree College Poonch auditorium, where participants took a pledge to work towards a drug-free society. District Social Welfare Officer Khalil A. Banday administered the pledge.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma said the administration would pursue a zero-tolerance approach towards drug trafficking. “Strict action will be taken against offenders, while efforts to strengthen awareness and rehabilitation will continue simultaneously,” he said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shafqat Bhat underscored the importance of community participation in tackling the issue. “A police-public partnership is essential to curb drug abuse at the grassroots level,” he said.
Officials from the District Legal Services Authority and the Health Department briefed participants on the legal implications of drug peddling and the adverse health effects of substance abuse.
According to officials, substance abuse has emerged as a growing concern in parts of the district, prompting authorities to intensify awareness and preventive measures.
Cultural performances by local artists highlighted the social and personal consequences of drug addiction.
Later, an awareness march involving students and members of civil society was flagged off from the college grounds. The march passed through the main market and concluded at the historic Poonch Fort. A signature campaign was also organised as part of the outreach initiative.
The programme was coordinated by the Social Welfare, Information, Education, and Youth Services & Sports departments in collaboration with the police.
