Poonch, December 29, 2025:Security agencies have launched an intensive investigation after an unidentified drone was recovered in a border area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, triggering fresh concerns over aerial surveillance and cross-border security threats in the sensitive region.According to official sources, the drone was found lying abandoned in an open field in the Mendhar sector by local residents, who immediately alerted the authorities. Acting swiftly on the information, teams of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Special Operations Group (SOG) rushed to the spot and secured the device.The area was promptly cordoned off as a precautionary measure, and a preliminary technical examination of the drone was carried out on-site before it was taken into custody for detailed forensic analysis. Officials said the make, origin, flight path and possible payload capabilities of the drone are being examined to ascertain its purpose and operators.“An investigation has been initiated to determine whether the drone was being used for surveillance, smuggling, or any other unlawful activity. All possibilities are being thoroughly examined,” a senior security official said, requesting anonymity.Poonch district, located close to the Line of Control (LoC), is considered highly sensitive from a security perspective. In recent years, there has been an increasing use of drones in border areas for reconnaissance and for attempting to drop weapons, narcotics, or other contraband. Against this backdrop, the latest recovery has heightened alertness among security forces deployed in the region.Following the incident, security checks and surveillance have been further intensified across vulnerable pockets of the district. Joint patrols by the police and other security agencies have been reinforced, and villagers have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects or movements immediately.Officials clarified that no arrests have been made so far, and there is no immediate evidence linking the drone to any specific group. However, intelligence agencies are working closely with technical experts to trace the drone’s communication systems and possible control points.The incident comes at a time when security arrangements across Jammu and Kashmir have already been strengthened in view of the year-end and upcoming public activities.
