POONCH MIRROR 6 JANUARY

Srinagar, Jan 6:A massive fire broke out on Tuesday evening in the Tengpora Bulbulbagh Road area of Srinagar, engulfing several godowns and causing extensive damage to property, officials said.

According to official sources, the fire erupted around 5:00 PM in one of the godowns and quickly spread to adjoining structures due to the presence of highly inflammable materials, including carpets, furniture, paint, thermocol and other stored goods. Thick plumes of smoke and towering flames were visible from a considerable distance, triggering panic in the surrounding localities.

Upon receiving information, teams from the Jammu and Kashmir Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot with multiple fire tenders and launched a large-scale firefighting operation. Firefighters faced significant challenges due to the intensity of the blaze, narrow access roads and the combustible nature of the stored materials.

After several hours of sustained effort, fire personnel managed to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to nearby residential areas. However, by then, multiple godowns had been completely gutted, resulting in substantial financial losses.

During the operation, one firefighter reportedly suffered breathing difficulties due to smoke inhalation and was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where his condition is stated to be stable. No civilian casualties have been reported so far.

Eyewitnesses said the incident caused widespread fear, forcing people to rush out of nearby buildings, while vehicular movement along the Tengpora–Bulbulbagh Road remained disrupted for some time. Police personnel were deployed to cordon off the area and facilitate emergency operations.

Preliminary estimates suggest that the fire caused losses running into crores of rupees, although the exact extent of damage will be assessed after a detailed inspection.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire. While a short circuit is suspected to be the possible trigger, officials said the exact cause will be determined after a thorough inquiry.
