Concerns are being raised over the pace of implementation of government directives aimed at regulating unverified and non-registered media activity in Jammu and Kashmir, with little visible change reported on the ground in Poonch district months after the policy push.

In November last year, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, while chairing a high-level review meeting, directed district administrations and law enforcement agencies to identify individuals allegedly misrepresenting themselves as journalists and misusing social media platforms. The meeting underscored the need to bring online media actors under a transparent and accountable framework to uphold journalistic standards and curb the spread of misinformation.

Residents and local observers in Poonch say that certain social media accounts continue to operate in ways that, at times, raise questions about accuracy and verification.

A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that some content circulating online appears to present events without full context, potentially contributing to public confusion. These claims, however, could not be independently verified.

There has been no specific public response from district authorities or the police regarding the situation in Poonch. Officials have, in previous statements, maintained that existing legal provisions allow action against the dissemination of false or misleading information.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of registration and verification mechanisms for individuals and platforms engaged in news dissemination. The Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) has been tasked with playing a central role in this process, aimed at distinguishing credible journalism from unverified content.

Media analysts note that with the rapid expansion of digital platforms, ensuring accountability in information dissemination has become increasingly critical. They argue that clearly defined guidelines, coupled with consistent enforcement, are essential to maintaining public trust.

Experts suggest that while policy direction has been established, the effectiveness of these measures depends on sustained monitoring and enforcement at the district level. Without consistent follow-through, they warn, regulatory intent risks remaining largely procedural.

The situation in Poonch highlights the broader challenge of translating policy directives into tangible outcomes on the ground. While concerns have been voiced locally, a comprehensive assessment incorporating official data and responses remains necessary before drawing definitive conclusions.
