Srinagar: In a major security operation, the Budgam ammunition recovery took place in the Chadoora area of the district, where joint forces seized ammunition from three suspects and registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

According to police sources, the operation was jointly carried out by personnel from Police Station Chadoora and the 53 Rashtriya Rifles following specific inputs. During the search and interception, the three individuals were taken into custody, and ammunition of different types was recovered from their possession.

Officials said the Budgam ammunition recovery is being viewed as a serious security concern, prompting agencies to examine whether the seized material was intended for unlawful use or linked to any wider network operating in the region.

A senior police officer said that all three detainees are residents of Mochwa village in the Chadoora area. “The recovered ammunition has been seized as per legal procedure. Preliminary questioning has been conducted, and further investigation is underway,” the officer said.

Given the sensitivity of the recovery, security agencies have widened the probe to ascertain the source of the ammunition and to identify any possible links or networks involved. Officials said all aspects, including logistical support and intent, are being examined.

Police confirmed that a formal case under the provisions of the UAPA has been registered against the accused, and investigations are continuing. Authorities reiterated that strict action will be taken against anyone found involved in activities posing a threat to public safety and security in the region.

Officials said Budgam district, particularly its Chadoora belt, has remained under heightened security vigilance due to its strategic location and past incidents linked to unlawful activities. Security agencies have, in recent months, stepped up coordinated operations aimed at preventing the movement and misuse of arms and ammunition in civilian areas.

Police officials reiterated that the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act is invoked in cases where recovered material is suspected to have links with activities that may pose a threat to public order and national security. They added that the law provides a legal framework to investigate wider networks and prevent potential misuse of such material.

Authorities further said that the investigation will focus on tracing the origin of the seized ammunition and identifying any individuals who may have facilitated its storage or movement. More arrests, if warranted by evidence, cannot be ruled out, officials added.
