Terrorist hideouts in Kathua: Jammu, January 17:Joint security forces have unearthed and dismantled three terrorist hideouts in the forested areas of Billawar tehsil in Kathua district following two separate encounters with terrorists, officials said on Thursday.
The operations were launched on the basis of specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of anti-national elements in the dense forest belts of Kamaad Nallah, Kalaban and Dhanu Parole areas of Billawar. Acting on the information, coordinated teams of security forces initiated a search and cordon operation in the region.
According to official sources, the security forces came under indiscriminate fire from the terrorists, leading to an exchange of gunfire that continued throughout the night. Taking advantage of darkness and difficult terrain, the terrorists managed to escape.
Following the encounters, the forces carried out an extensive and systematic search of the area. The first hideout was detected and cleared on Wednesday. From the site, the forces recovered two empty cartridges of an M4 carbine, a plastic container of desi ghee, a polythene packet containing almonds, and several items of daily use including hand gloves, a cap, a blanket, a tarpaulin sheet, a small pouch and a polythene bag.

On Thursday, the ongoing operation led to the detection of two more hideouts in the Kalikhad and Kalaban sub-areas. From these locations, the forces recovered various logistical supplies, indicating sustained use of the hideouts. The seized items included a cooking gas cylinder, cooking oil, utensils, an empty oil gallon, a water container, charger wires, hand gloves, large plastic bags, a torch, blankets, and wrappers of consumed food items along with other miscellaneous articles.
In a separate but related development, three individuals have been detained in Kathua district for questioning after investigators found Pakistani mobile phone numbers in their possession during preliminary scrutiny. Officials said further investigations are underway to establish possible links and contacts.
Security forces have maintained a heightened vigil in the region to prevent any potential threat.
