Jammu and Kashmir Cannot Be Separated: Farooq Abdullah Rejects Demand for Jammu Statehood

POONCH JANUARY 13, 2026

Jammu Kashmir Cannot Be Separated : Jammu Kashmir Cannot Be Separated, National Conference president and former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah said on Monday, firmly rejecting any proposal aimed at dividing the region.

His remarks came against the backdrop of a recent demand raised by a BJP legislator seeking separate statehood for Jammu, which has triggered a political controversy across the Union Territory. Reiterating his stand, Dr Abdullah said that Jammu Kashmir cannot be separated under any political or administrative arrangement.

Speaking to media persons during his visit to the Narwal Fruit Mandi in Jammu, Dr Abdullah said that neither Jammu can be separated from Kashmir nor Kashmir from Jammu. Drawing a strong analogy, he remarked, “It would be like severing the head from the body. Jammu is the head and Kashmir is the body.” He emphasised that the two regions share a deep-rooted historical, political and emotional bond that cannot be dismantled.

The former Chief Minister further claimed that the people of Ladakh also wish to be reunited with Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that the unity of the region reflects the aspirations of its people. He warned that any attempt to divide the region would hurt public sentiments, as Jammu Kashmir cannot be separated historically or emotionally.

The statement has gained significance after BJP MLA Shyam Lal Sharma recently alleged discrimination against Jammu and demanded separate statehood for the region. The demand sparked sharp political reactions across Jammu and Kashmir. However, BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit president Sat Sharma distanced the party from the remarks, clarifying that the statement did not represent the official stand of the BJP.

During his visit to the fruit mandi, Dr Abdullah was accompanied by senior National Conference leaders, including provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta and SC Cell chairman Vijay Lochan. The NC chief also interacted with traders, listened to their grievances and assured them that their genuine demands would be taken up with the government.

Dr Abdullah claimed that the National Conference–led government has implemented several welfare-oriented initiatives over the past year for the benefit of the people and said that more such measures are in the pipeline. Addressing the traders, he said there was no cause for concern and reaffirmed that all promises made to the public would be fulfilled.

The National Conference has consistently maintained that Jammu Kashmir cannot be separated, and unity remains central to its political ideology.
