19 Dead, Several Injured After Bus Skids Off Road in Udhampur:

At least 19 people were killed and several others injured in the Udhampur bus accident after a vehicle skidded off the road in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramnagar area on April 20, prompting a major rescue operation.

Udhampur, April 20: At least 19 passengers were killed and several others injured after a bus skidded off the road in Kagort village of Ramnagar in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Monday morning.

According to officials, police, rescue teams, and local residents rushed to the scene immediately after the incident and launched a rescue operation. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Udhampur-Reasi Range, Shiv Kumar Sharma, said that the accident occurred at a sharp curve. “The driver may have lost control while negotiating the sharp turn. The vehicle hit a parapet and rolled down into a gorge,” he said. He added that whether the bus was overloaded remains under investigation.

Meanwhile, Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives. In a post on X, he said, “Pained to hear about the loss of lives due to a bus accident in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.

”The Prime Minister also announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that 16 persons died on the spot, while several others sustained serious injuries, indicating that the casualty figures are still being updated as rescue operations continue.

“Rescue and evacuation operations are underway with teams from Police, SDRF and district administration on site. The injured are being shifted to GMC Udhampur for urgent medical treatment. I and my office are in constant touch,” he added.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offering condolences to the bereaved families and directing authorities to ensure all possible assistance to the affected.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed grief, stating that the government stands firmly with the victims and their families in this hour of tragedy and that all necessary support is being extended.
