DC Reviews Urban Local Bodies’ Performance in Poonch, Emphasises Sanitation and Infrastructure Upgrades

POONCH, March 11: Deputy Commissioner Poonch, Ashok Kumar Sharma, on Tuesday chaired a review meeting to assess the functioning of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the district and evaluate the progress of civic and infrastructure-related works in municipal areas.

During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner reviewed the ongoing developmental activities being carried out by the municipal authorities, with discussions focusing on sanitation management, infrastructure development, revenue generation and the overall delivery of municipal services.

Executive Officer of Municipal Council Poonch, Khalil A. Banday, gave a presentation outlining the physical and financial status of works currently being undertaken by the council. The presentation also covered aspects such as the council’s own-source revenue, available staff strength, sanitation arrangements and the progress of various development projects.

Officials also discussed planning priorities for the upcoming financial year. The deliberations included proposals for improving sanitation services, upgrading lanes and drainage systems, and carrying out beautification works aimed at enhancing the town’s urban environment.

Compliance with directions issued by the National Green Tribunal also came up for discussion. In this regard, the proposed establishment of a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was reviewed as part of efforts to improve waste management and environmental protection in the town.

The meeting further examined the status of works being executed under District Capex and UT Capex programmes, with emphasis on timely implementation, planning and optimal use of available resources.

Among those present at the meeting were Additional District Development Commissioner Tahir Mustafa Malik, the Chief Planning Officer, Superintending Engineer Jal Shakti, Executive Engineers of the Power Development Department, Jal Shakti Department and Public Works Department (Poonch/Surankote), the District Environmental Protection Officer, and other concerned officials.
