DC Poonch Chairs NCORD Meeting, Calls for Zero Tolerance Against Drug Menace

The meeting of the District-Level Narco Coordination Committee (NCORD) was convened amid increasing concerns over substance abuse, particularly among the youth. The Deputy Commissioner stressed the need for a multi-pronged, zero-tolerance approach, combining strict law enforcement with sustained public awareness to uproot the drug menace from society.

During the DC Poonch NCORD meeting, Sub-Divisional Magistrates and Tehsildars presented area-wise assessments on drug abuse patterns, illegal trafficking routes, and their socio-economic impact, with special focus on vulnerable sections of society, including students and young adults.

Highlighting the crucial role of educational institutions, the Deputy Commissioner directed the Education Department to strengthen anti-drug awareness programmes in schools and colleges. He also instructed officials to maintain strict vigilance over shops, kiosks, and canteens operating near educational campuses to prevent any illicit access to narcotic substances.

To tighten enforcement, Sharma ordered regular monitoring of CCTV footage at medical stores and other identified sensitive locations, enabling early detection of suspicious activities. He further asked officers, in coordination with the Forest Department, to identify and destroy any illegal cultivation of cannabis or similar substances within the district.

Linking road safety with narcotics control, the meeting also reviewed traffic enforcement measures. Tehsildars were directed to strictly implement the “No Helmet, No Fuel” policy through designated checkpoints, a step aimed at enhancing road discipline while discouraging driving under the influence of drugs.

The Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) was instructed to launch special testing drives to identify motorists operating vehicles under the influence of narcotics and take stringent action as per law.

The meeting was attended by Senior Superintendent of Police Shafqat Hussain Bhat, Additional Deputy Commissioner Tahir Mustafa Malik, District Social Welfare Officer, senior police and civil officers, principals of various colleges, and representatives from social welfare departments, reflecting a coordinated and inclusive strategy.

The DC Poonch NCORD meeting underscored the administration’s firm commitment to building a drug-free Poonch, emphasizing that sustained coordination between law enforcement, civil administration, educational institutions, and community stakeholders is vital to winning the battle against drugs.
